Joe, there were most certainly many sailors from the United Kingdom who served in the Confederate Navy, and not only on the CSS ALABAMA, but on various other vessels. In my studies on the Navies, I have come across numerous mentions of these sailors in the Confederate Navy. The CSS SHENANDOAH also included many from the United Kingdom. If you have not already seen the roll for this vessel, please let me know and I will provide a link to the volumes of the Alabama Claims, which includes this roll. The CSS FLORIDA also included many from the UK. My web sites include lists of Confederate sailors from several vessels, many of whom were natives of the UK. Check especially the lists for the Charity hospital and the CSS ST. PHILIP, in New Orleans. Series 1, volume 20, page 843 of the Naval Official Records includes the statements of two or three British subjects who indicated that they were actually impressed into the Confederate Navy. I have seen several other mentions in the pages of the ORN of British subjects who served in the CSN.
