Following the end of the war, the "Atlanta" was laid up at the League Island Navy Yard, she remained there with several other surplus ironclads until she was sold by the Navy to a Mr Sam Ward about May 14, 1869 for $25.000.
In Haiti, during 1869 there was a rebel group attempting to overthrow President Sylvain Salnave, and both sides purchased naval vessels from the US. Mr Ward resold the vessel to a Sydney Oaksmith an attorney from New York City.

On Dec. 8th, 1869 formal delivery of the ship was made to representatives of the Haiti Government by Mr Oaksmith upon a downpayment of $50.000. Total price being $260,000 and it appeared Mr Oaksmith planned to collect the balance by sailing with the vessel to Haiti. Indications are that he was acting on behalf of a shipping firm in NYC. While the vessel was being prepared for sea, she was seized by the US Customs for possible violation of the neutrality laws by taking on 4 heavy cannon. (wouldnt James Bulloch in Liverpool have loved reading this!)
After release by the Philadelphia Customs Collector, she sailed on Dec 11. for Port-au Prince, she broke down in Delaware Bay and was towed back to Chester. PA. for repair.
She finally weighed anchor on the 17th and sailed one more time, getting as far as Lewes, Delaware. on the 19th.

Picked up some dispatches and sailed again about 4.15pm. she carried some 120 people on board although an accurate list of names is not available.

She was never seen again, reports of her striking a reef off Fortune Island in the Bahamas proved untrue. Some believe that her low freeboard contributed to her sinking, others thought the constant leaking of water into her sponsons, devices added to her hull during conversion may have caused her to list and eventually flood. but no one really knows.
