Well over 100 crewmen were killed or mortally wounded when the steam drum of the U.S.S. Mound City (a city-class river ironclad) was struck by a Confederate shot on June 17, 1862, at St. Charles on the White River in eastern Arkansas. Most victims were scalded to death, others drowned, and a few were shot while struggling in the water by chivalrous Confederates firing from the bank of the river. The gunboat suffered little damage except to the steam drum and was soon back in service. This sometimes is referred to as "the most destructive single shot of the Civil War" by various historians.
