The European Winans vessels came in two types: A pair of cigar ships, 1 large and 1 "Yacht". They did not use the center-body enclosed rotor of the prototype. They featured propellers at both ends. There were also attempts to build military versions in Russia and at least two were completed. Let me dig up the URL for a teriffic web-site on these ships for you. It is highly documented including patents. Actually, from an applications viewpoint, the Cigar Ships had issues. 1) They drew too much water for the shallow southern harbors. 2) They required some serious machine shops and mechanics to build the propulsion systems. 3) They weren't particularly seaworthy. Because of their length to beam ratio, they would have had a "critical" wave length problem and a tendency to "dig in". Winans thought this was swell, he pictured his ships as plowing through a wave, rather than rising over it. Not so good in heavy seas. Look at the height of the air-intakes and picture a storm. "Normal steamers" had similar equipment, but their hulls rode up over the waves keeping the air-intakes clear. The CSN used a very different hull form for their torpedo boats. They would function better in rougher water, and drew less water (always useful when hiding or running from the big guys). The European cigar-ships were around for about 20 years, swinging at anchor in England. Don't know what happened to the Russian versions. One supposes that the Union Consul in England kept a careful eye on Winans. I'd guess that somewhere in the reports from Europe, the state department had a file on his activities. You also wonder why the Confederates didn't try to use his expertise in purchasing railroad equipment for shipment to the Confederacy.
