Has anyone out there ever researched individuals/groups of
Confederate soldiers POWs who took the oath of allegiance
to the U.S. government and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy?
I am trying to follow though on two such individuals who
were in a group sent from Camp Douglas to Portsmouth, N.H.
Navy Yard as new recruits. I am trying to locate their
places of burial. They were:
1. Rountree, William, Co. G, 22nd Ala. Inf.
who died en route at the U.S. General Hospital
at Cleveland, Ohio June 20, 1864. There is no
record of his burial in Cleveland.
2. J.D. Wofford, Co. B, 52d Ga. Inf. Enlisted in
March l862 at Cleveland, Ga.(yes, Ga.) and
captured at Cassville, Ga. on May 20, l864.
He was hospitalized at the U.S. General
Hospital at Cleveland, Ohio between June l5
and Aug. 20 when released to return to duty.
They passed through Cleveland, Ohio en route to Portsmouth.
Could Rountree's remain ever have been sent back to Ala.
for burial or could Wofford ever have returned to Ga. since
they had renounced allegiance to the C.S.A.?
