The Official Roster of Ohio Troops in the War of the
Rebellion, Vol. VII, p. 769 states that Pvt. Sylvester T.
Horton, Co. F, 103d O.V.I. was buried at sea on Mar. 31,
1865 becasue he, "perished by burning of steamer General
Lyons off coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C." (This should not
be confused with the river steamer USS General Lyon(l862-
1865), originally named DeSoto. The Lyon was renamed
Alabama as a civilian steamer and burned on April l, l867
at Grand View, La.) Does anyone have any idea on how to
get information on the General Lyon that burned off Cape
Hatteras? Did it sink or not. I think that these may have
been two difference ships.
