Re: CSA Singer Secret Service Corps!

Is there actually any documentation that the Shreveport subs were completed? One was reported to have been shipped to Galveston in parts, then to be reassembled. One of the CSN officers from Shreveport was detailed late in the war to command the vessel which was termed a "torpedo boat". What I've never been able to understand is just what they thought could be achieved by submarines on the Red River? I don't know how fast the river flows, but I have serious doubts that a man-powered sub would make much progress coming back up river. The Hunley's operations were timed to make use of the changes in tide. You would think that small steam torpedo boats would have had more utility, using one of the riverboats as a mother ship. The Viper, built at Columbus, GA, would probably have been operated in this manner.
