Is there anyone out there who is doing a study of, or researching the Union Navy vessel, the USS Essex, during the Civil War? I have compared the photographs of the vessel, at the Naval Historical Center's web site (see link below), to William Philbrick's sketch of the vessel (also shown at the same web site), and am convinced that not all of those photos are of the same vessel. Philbrick's sketch would obviously be a first hand view of the vessel, and the rounded sides that he drew of the vessel (together with other distinctive features), compares to only one or two of the photos, while the other images seem to be of some other vessel/s. Anyone else interested in correcting these misidentifications?
