You're correct about portfires. There were 2 issued in each limber chest. They were sort of out-of fashion by the time of the ACW, hence the 'old-fashioned' reference.
Quick-match was also used, by poking holes in the cartridge bag and running it down the barrel with the charge.
Wouldn't the safety officers have a heart attack if we tried that procedure today? I can see it now: "light fuse and get away"
