Re: Powder Barrel Standards

George,

Are you sure this isn't "reworked" rather than "revoked"? George, I've always been curious about the blackpowder imported from Mexico, and the quality thereof. Was this black powder manufactured in Cuba or did it just come through there? Does anyone know what a recipe of blackpowder, short of the requisite amount of saltpeter would do to the quality and performance of that blackpowder?

Recently, I watched a program on Discovery or the History Channel about the battle of Palo Alto, the first major battle of the Mexican War. They attributed part of the Mexican loss to the quality of Mexican manufactured black powder. I am quite familiar with the battle of Honey Springs fought July 17th 1863 in the Indian Territory. In this battle, as well, substandard Mexican black powder was used by the Confederates and in the Summer heat it would melt to a paste and the explosive power of it was unreliable or weak.

Are there any stories regarding the subsequent use of this Cuban black powder?

Interesting!

Jim
