Thanks George- Some of the powder in the New Orleans magazine originally belonged to the Spanish. It was condemned prior to the bombardment of the forts on the lower Mississippi. One of the arsenal jobs was a barrel turner. The nitrates settled down the barrel, requiring periodic rotation of the barrel in order to maintain a useable product.
I have a small amount of rifle powder from the conflict. It still burns.
The grains for the artillery were course. Corning (the addition of water to powder, then forming large grains followed by a drying) was necessary to form the larger, slower burning grains.
I'll write to DuPont and ask what they have on the record.
