The muster roll of the Joe Thompson (Georgia) Battery (Captain Lewis J. Parr, Captain Cornelius R. Hanleiter) for March-April 1862, Camp Mercer, Savannah, reads as follows: “The company has drilled principally as light infantry. Their battery of breech-loading pieces having been condemned by General [Alexander Robert] Lawton in February, last. They are now receiving their new battery and will commence the light artillery drill immediately and in earnest.” Does anyone have any idea what kind of breechloaders these were?
