Among the available figures from Confederate four-gun batteries at Gettysburg (July 1863), the total number of personnel present in a battery ranged from a low of 58 to a high of 114. The average number present (from a sample of 48 batteries) was 85. Also, there were several recorded instances when nearby infantry units were asked to furnish men to work the guns because of casualties among the crews during the battle.
