Mr. Hauck:
You may be having the same confusion that I had. The Quitman Light Artillery, commanded by Lovell and English, and the Quitman Artillery, commanded by Kerr may be the one and the same. In my last post, you may notice a void in command of the battery. Lovell appears to have left command of the battery, sometime in the summer 1861, when he was promoted. Captain English does not appear until Summer 1862. Who was in command? I believe it was Capt Kerr, who probably gave up command when the battery reorganized. Don't forget that in March to May 1862, was the time period that confederate units were forced by the confederate conscription law to reorganize for the duration, Enter Capt. English. Is there or was there a Quitman County in Mississippi in 1861? Is Natchez in Quitman County? If you can answer, it may provide a further clue.

A still likely scenario is the battery went to Pensacola/Mobile area, reorganized and went to Port Hudson, summer, 1862. If true, would clear up much confusion. Why would they have no guns at Port Hudson?
