Mr. Hauck:
Your are right in that the history of this battery seems to be sketchy with lapses of silence. After reading further, I have no source that indicates the Quitman Light Artillery served at Pensacola. However, I do see Major William S. Lovell serving at Pensacola in October, 1861 as Chief of Harbor Police. I found mention of Lovell as the commander of this battery, and based on the timing of your info, was probably in command in the the summer of 1861. Notice that this rank is higher than a battery commander and if the battery was in Pensacola, Lovell had been promoted and replaced by this time. Later transfered to New Orleans, Lovell was promoted to Lieut. Col., and in Summer, 1862 was in Vicksburg, in various staff positions. Captain J. F. Kerr may have replaced Major Lovell (I'm still working on this one)in command of the battery and continued into 1862. Do you have any info concerning Capt. Kerr? Capt. Richard T. English was next in command of the battery and took it to Port Hudson, LA. It is reported there in August, 1862, served until it was surrendered in July 1863. It never reformed. Please remember that confederate batteries had an offical name (Quitman Light Artillery) but were known by the name of their commander. I found mention to both Lovell's battery and English's battery as you, no doubt, also found. Consider that the battery commanded by Caot. Richard T. English may have still been offically the Quitman Light Artillery.

My best guess scenario is that, based on your and my information, the battery formed in April or May, 1861 for one year service, and moved to Pensacola, served there until moving to Vicksburg in April 1862. Here it reorganized with Captain English replacing Capt Kerr and then it moved to Port Hudson. You detect that this a recontructed history, can you fill in any gaps? Maybe we can agree.
