Augusta Cannon

A Friend is researching a cannon that was dug up in northern Michigan. It was discovered about 6 feet under ground on the site where a hotel was being constructed. The muzzle has been blown/knocked/? off but the trunnion has Augusta, GA Govt stamped on it. It is an iron, banded cannon, but smoothbore and about the size for a 12 pdr. Looks a bit like a big parrott gun, but not exactly. Am seeking any information regarding this cannon's manufacture, history, as well as the reason it might have turned up six feet under in Michigan. I have a photo, but I don't know how to attach it here. Thanks.
