Type Marked Artillery Shells?

Curious if anyone has found any information, directives, or evidence of artillery shells being color coded to help better identify a given type or load. Not the ammo crates, the shells themselves.

In recent research kept finding in period documents & dispatches in regard to incendiary shells (Greek Fire / Liquid Fire)of a particular maker being refered to and commonly called by the artillerist as the "Green Top Shells". Thus curious why this particular description or slang phrase afforded.... less they actually had some indentifying marks or (green?) painted top so they could easily be indentified from the other common loaded shells.
