Dennis,

Not sure if you are still interested in the 5th Maine but I have been interested in this unit for a few years now. My GG Grandfather was a member of this unit. He served from 61 through 65 with them (Corydon Powers from Hanover, Maine). I have done some amateur research on this unit and have some bits of information. We have his diary from the final year of the war at which time we think he had something to do with supply as there are several entries regarding issuing "rations". His diary is barely legible at this point as it was done in pencil and a lot of the pages are faded beyond legible. I have visited Gettysburg, Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chancelorsville all of which the 5th Maine had prominence, they have monuments or markers at the first three that I could find. John Chase's Medal of Honor is at the Chancelorsville visitors center, there is a marker on Chinn Ridge at Manassas and two monuments at Gettysburg. (none of this is probably any news to you). There is a museum in Caribou Maine where they have my ancestor's saddle from the war as well as a practice or training pole used during his training. Unfortunately I didn't have a lot of time at this museum to see if there were any more items that were his. We have a period unit listing poster and his canteen still in the family as well. I have found online a couple of sketches done by artists during the war with the 5th maine as the subject. I have visited the Maine state archives and they have quite a folder with lot's of letters mostly from the officers. They also have a muster out photograph of the unit however they don't seem to have the men in the photo identified. My goal is to make it to all of the battlefields that they involved with.

I would be very interested in reading anything that you are working on or completed on this unit or if I can help you out at all on the project.

Regards,

JD in Hill, NH.
