Tony, I'm not sure what to add to your facts. The rate of fire was whatever was needed. Could be that a "lack" of rapid firing was due to the inability to resupply. I'm sure the artillery was used often for masking infantry movements. In addition to the smoke and noise the demoralizing effect of incoming rounds was considerable. There sure were a lot of rifled six pounders there. That alone is an interesting bit of information. Six pounders were rapidly phased out for their "lack of power". Especially by the Federal Army. Could be that they were James Rifles. There was only one six pounder (smoothbore) at Gettysburg. A bronze piece that belonged to Latham's North Carolina Battery. Where did this account come from? I hope Ron Black will weigh in here. He knows his guns.
