Re: Artillery Pieces
In Response To: Artillery Pieces ()

Relying on my memory applies to me as well. I could have resorted to my own confederate artillery files before answering but have now done so. Remember that artillery batteries changed the type of guns they had during the civil war often, depending on the availablity of new cannon, battle losses, condition of the guns and so on. I can tell you that in the July thru Sept time period, Capt. D'Aquin's battery was equipped with one 10 pounder Parrott and two 3" Rifles but their guns may have been lost. In fact, on November 7th, 1863, while commanded by Capt. Charles A Green and serving in a bridgehead on the Rappahannock river in Virginia, The bridgehead was captured by Federal troops. The battery suffered the loss of four cannon and with only 50 men remaining. The battery was sent to re-equip as a heavy artillery battery manning the defenses on Richmond VA. Thje battery retreated from Richmond when the city was lost and was surrendered at Appomattox with no officers present and only 17 men.

An interesting note is the first commander of the battery was Captain Camille Girardey, the brother of Captain Isadore Girardey, the commander of the Washington Artillery of Augusta GA. Later, Isadore Girardey was the inventor of the Girardey fuse for artillery projectiles, an improvement over those available to the confederates.

Hope this helps
Ron
