the 12 pounders at Tilghman's Gate, Va.

On July 27, 1864 the Union II Corps and Sheridan's cavalry stealthily crossed pontoon bridges and appeared in front of three Confederate infantry brigades and one cavalry brigade. In this skirmish, the opening of the First Battle of Deep Bottom, the Federals prevailed and routed the rebels.

Hancock's Federals began deploying to follow up their success when two twelve-pound guns opened fire on his right flank. The unexpected appearance of these cannon made Hancock turn cautious. Seldom have two guns produced a greater result. His infantry did not attack the main line of works at New Market Heights as ordered.

For years I have been trying to identify the outfit these guns belonged to. Does anyone have any ideas?
