Number six and seven were in charge of extracting the round from the ammo chest and fixing the fuze per the Gunner's instructions. No 5 received the round at the limber. Number 7 did not bring it to him. The Gunner gave the command to fire, not the Chief of the Piece. The Chief of the Piece was an observer and reported fire effect to the Section Commander, a lieutenant. What's going on in that picture is drill. The fellow on the far right could be the Chief of the Piece or simply an observer or instructor.
