Yes, Mr. Mayo is right.

A Read shell is described in its diamter or sometimes sabot configuration, but not weight. Also the nomenclature of the cannon has very little to do with the type of shell or shot that was fired, the only exception is a 6pdr, 12pdr, 24pdr, etc smoothbore. When describing shells, especially rifled projectiles, one needs to know the diameter above all.

Even with James Projectiles, collectors describe this as a 3.8" James Projectile or 3.67" Hotchkiss, 3.8" Hotckhiss, all fired from a James Gun or 6pdr w/ James Rifling.
