Re: Hart's artillery battery - described in letter

Kenneth, it's possible that it was Hart's Battry but I think unlikely. The 17th Arkansas was part of McCulloch's Division and had fought on the first day of the battle at Leetown, on the opposite side of the battlefield. During the second day's fight they were near Elkhorn Tavern in reserve. The way I understand it, when the main body of Confederates retreated east on the Huntsville Road, the 17th lost track of other retreting units and instead fell back north through Tanyard Hollow. They halted and waited for orders. The Federals didn't realize that the main body of Confederates had retreated east and launched their pursuit to the north, where they encountered the 17th, which made a brief stand before retiring.

Hart's battery had evidently been ordered to the rear earlier in the day, so I suspect that they were long gone. But who knows? In the confusion of the retreat it might indeed have been them. Evidently details of exactly what transpired are lacking.

Hope that helps.

Bill
