18 Pounder Blakely guns from England

A 9 June 1863 letter from William N. Pendleton, artillery chief for the Army of Northern Virginia, to Colonel Brown, a battalion commander in the Second Corps, describes Pendleton's efforts to pawn off 18 Pounder Blakely guns due to arrive that evening "fresh from Engd [England] with 200 rds [rounds] of ammut. [ammunition] each, iron carriages & everything complete." Pendleton wanted two 10 Pounder Parrotts in exchange. He had approached battalion commanders Jones and Andrews, but they preferred to keep their Parrotts. He asked Brown to also see if Colonel Carter wanted them. Pendleton said he wanted them to go to the Second Corps because it had the "fewest powerful guns," but he was prepared to give them over to the First Corps instead. The Blakelys were not reported with the army at Gettysburg, so what became of them is not known. This letter is in the Pendleton Papers at the Library of Virginia in Richmond.
