In the OR report of Col D. C. Anthony, 66th Indiana Vol Inf, dated Colliersville, Tenn., 12 Oct 1863, he describes his post having been attacked the previous day by the enemy, armed with, among other artillery, "five 1 1/2-inch Williams rifled guns". Possibly his description was mistaken. The gun was reported to have been unusually accurate at long range for a smooth-bore, and this may have caused Col Anthony and his troops to assume that these guns firing at them would have had to have been rifled.

Their size and maneuverability were advantages when used together with cavalry outfits. An artillery specialist who had praised the gun for its effectiveness during the Peninsula Campaign later sought to have some Williams guns sent to his command in Texas, stating he thought they could be put to good use with the cavalry on the plains there.
