Re: Georgia Washington Artillery
The Washington Artillery of Augusta Georgia was a pre-war militia unit dated from 1854. It was known as "The Pride of Old Time Augusta". It was one of the only two militia artillery units that joined with the Confederate army in Tennessee as an organized artillery battery. It was commanded by Captain Isadore P. Girardey in April 1861 when the battery was enrolled in the confederate army, as a battery of six guns. It was sent to Pensacola, Florida and moved to Corinth, Mississippi as part of the forces that General Bragg brought to the army concentration to oppose the advance of the union forces into Tennessee. It did good service at the Battle of Shiloh and later moved into Kentucky with General Bragg's army now commanded by Captain John R. B. Burtwell. After the retreat out of Kentucky, it was commanded by Lieutenant W. R. Pritchard as a two gun section of artillery. It continued service with the Army of Tennessee at Tullohoma and retreated back to Chattoonga. After the battle of Missionary Ridge, the section(battery) was sent to Atlanta and became part of the garrision of that city. Early 1864, the section was converted to heavy artillery and became part of the 22nd Georgia Artillery Battalion which was commanded by now Lieutenant Colonel William Pritchard. This battalion served on the Georgia coast, Savannah and now as infantry in the Carolinas Campaign back with the Army of Tennessee. The battalion was surrendered in April, 1865. This information was put together from a variety of sources in little pieces of info. Really have no single comprehensive reference to cite.
