Here's something to ponder as well. In a six pounder smoothbore, ten pdr Parrott, and 3 inch Ordance Rifle the spec inventory is only 5 rounds of canister in each chest on the limber. So only two rounds of double canister could be fired before a resupply would be needed. Case shot, 20 rounds, was equally as deadly as canister and had more range as well relying on a fuze to explode the round. Or as Shawn Clark on this board has told us about "rotten shot" where the case shot round wasn't even fuzed and pretty much came out of the muzzle as schrapnel. A chest had to be custom supplied for more rounds of canister to be available and thus rendering the piece less effective at range with the dimished inventory of shot, case, and shell.
