The 36th North Carolina Volunteer Artillery Regiment, also called the 2nd North Carolina Artillery Regiment, was composed of ten companies. The men were from Cumberland, Columbus, Halifax, Brunswick, Sampson, New Hanover, and Bladen counties. The ten companies were five field (light) and five heavy artillery companies. The regiment saw service in North Carolina, specially Fort Fisher but a detachment was sent to Savannah GA in Decenber 1864. Following the loss of Fort Fisher, the remnants of the regiment saw service as infantry in North Carolina until the end of the war. This regiment was also called the Cape Fear Regiment.
