Randal,

Is the "military crest" different for artillery, than it is for infantry? I've read a number of articles and book descriptions of a military crest. The best known incorrect placement of troops on the crest of ridge would probably be the Confederate positions on Missionary Ridge. In these accounts, they state that the military crest for infantry was in front of the actual or topographical crest. The weakness in being on the actual crest or behind it was that the enemy was upon you or did not appear until they were very close.
