Thanks for the info. The orginial question was asked on a post that no longer appears on my computer. The author was referring to the Revolutionary war period.
As you mentioned concerning the Watson Artillery of Louisiana, privately financed units did occur but mainly in the south. Another very good example of private support was the Hampton Legion of South Carolina. Wade Hampton, one of the richest southern men, paid for this unit's equipment.
