I'm going to assume it is a cannonball and pursue trying to identify it as that. On the civil war site you pointed me to, there was little mention of any 18lb. solid shots. There was mention of a "whistling dick" which was an 18 pounder of 1839 that was later rifled. The exciting thing I've found so far is looking closer at a houston map. During (or just before) the battle at San Jacinto, Deaf Smith destrouyed a bridge to close off a retreat by Sant Anna. The bridge was called "Vince's Bridge" and was assumed to be across Vince's bayou. I found there is some controversy around that assumption. For a variety of good reasons many historians believe the bridge actually spanned sim's bayou. The place where I found the ball is 24 miles west of San Jacinto and a path between the two points would have to cross sim's bayou at some place. It would also cross Vince's bayou, but I agree with the Sim's bayou as the most probable location of a bridge. In either case, It indicates even stronger evidence that both armies probably passed the place where I found this. I'm going to look for a map of their routes if one is available.
