Re: 13th Tennessee Infantry and Shiloh Cannon

Tim:
The 13th Tennessee infantry was part of Russell's brigade, Clark's division of Polk's First Corps at the battle of Shiloh. The charge that captured the federal guns was made by a flank attack on the Shiloh Church plateau after the difficult fighting in the Rhea field. The battery attacked was Battery E, 1st Illinois Artillery commanded by Captain Waterhouse. This flank attack allowed the confederate troops to approach the battery, close enough to shoot the gunners and horses which resulted in three guns being captured with many dead horses still in the traces. The fourth gun was withdrawn from the field but later abandoned by the federal troops. Captain Waterhouse was wounded in the fighting on the Shiloh Church plateau. The guns captured were four 3.8" James Rifles. One report indicates these guns to have been 3.5" but this is impossible as there was no 3.5" but the differant type James rifles were all 3.8" rifles.

Although records were kept by the goverment concerning the types of cannon issued to the various batteries, none currently exist that relate cannon to certain locations and battles by serial number. At least, I believe this to be the case. There are a few instances in reports and stories where a serial number is mentioned but the possibility of linking these to the guns you ask about is zero. Many of the cannon were destroyed in battle or melted down for recasting during the civil war. The guns of this battery, James rifles were a type that many of which were recast and did not survive the civil war. The Gettysburg battlefield does have a few James rifles on the battlefield, none of which are traced to the battle of Shiloh. The best and largest collection of James Rifles is located on the Shiloh battlefield, again, these can be traced to the guns of Waterhouses's battery.
