The Civil War Artillery Message Board

Re: Civil War Paper Quarter
In Response To: Civil War Paper Quarter ()

Mr. Wyatt,

My name is Gerald D. Hodge, Jr. and I help moderate some of the History-Sites Civil War Message Boards. Thanks for your query, however, it may be more appropriate for a message board or website that has expertise in Civil War paper money. This message board is dedicated to Civil War Artillery.

One who collects paper money is called a notaphilic and there are a few out there. We cannot recommend a particular website but here are some considerations to take into account when looking for a reputable dealer. You want to find a dealer that is close to you so they can physically look at your bill and see if it authentic. They look at the bill, the paper, printing technique, and ink among other things. You cannot do this by scanning it and sending it to them digitally. You will also need to articulate to them what side printed it, description, condition, etc. Just that you have a "Civil War Paper Quarter, dated March 18, 1863" is not sufficient. The national governments of both sides, states, and even individual banks printed their own money so the possibilties are almost endless of what you may have. Some issues of currency are rarer than others thus the value is different.

We often shy away from placing value on items on these message boards. There are too many shysters out there looking to turn a buck on eBay or through some other venue and we do not want to be associated with that type of business.

I hope this helps.

Respectfully,

Gerald D. Hodge, Jr.
