Cannon on Board Merchant ships

In researching the transport ship "Mill Boy", I found information that the ship had a single cannon mounted on its deck, to aid in defense from Confederate Partisan Rangers who were preying on shipping on the Mississippi River.

My questions are:
1. What type of cannon was used for this purpose?
2. How and where was it mounted?
3. How/where would the caisson and ammunition box mentioned in the "OR" reports have been located on board the "MILL BOY"?
4. What would have mostly likely happened to the Cannon after it was salvaged off the sunken "Mill Boy" by the 1st Nebraska Calvary? (My guess was it would have been turned over to the depot Union Depot at Devall's Bluff.)
5. Did the 1st Nebraska Calvary Regiment have any Horse Artillery of their own?
Is there anyone on this Board who could help me find answers to these questions? I am "stumped" and any information regarding the Mill Boy/Cannon and the 1st Nebraska Calvary salvage operations, would be most gratefully appreciated.
