There were a few McClellan type Drivers Saddles with Valise Saddles for the off-side horse but most were the Grimsley pattern, but no check lines or reins were attached. Gun teams and caisson teams were not driven wagon style by someone sitting on the limber chest with reins to each pair of horses. Rather, they were driven postillion style with a driver for each pair of horses in the team. There was a McClellan issued with a horn, I think during or after WWI. A way to check the model of the saddle is the ring for the stirrup strap. If this is brass or bronze, it is a WWI issue saddle. Check the web page for the Society of the Military Horse: www.militaryhorse.org
There are some extremely well read and knowledgable folks over there, with a wealth of information regarding McClellan saddles. They are happy to point you in the right direction for research, and there are a couple of good articles on McClellan identification.
