Re: Sawyer Rifles

Does anyone know if any of these were used at sea? I ask because a one-pounder dubbed a "Butler Rifle" was captured off Sabine aboard the morning light. It was described as a breech-loader and apparently damaged when captured. The rifle was removed from the vessel. I've seen one source that states it was about "four feet long". There was also a small caliber Confederate weapon built in limited numbers in Texas during the war called a Nichols gun. The designer was the superintendent of the rail road between Galveston and Houston. There were at least two tried out by the Marine Department with poor results. I've never seen anything to indicate that either the Butler or Nichols guns were water jacketed - but I've never seen anything that says they weren't, either.
